What Just Happened?

Something for everybody.

  • Biden has apparently defeated Trump.
  • Republicans did well down the ballot.

It was the weirdest election ever.

  • We never had an incumbent president who came to office after losing the popular vote by so much (2.9 million votes in 2016).
  • We never had an impeached president running for reelection.
  • We never had a president this consistently unpopular.

We never had a presidential election during a pandemic of this scope.

We have never had an election with so many early votes  101 million, or about two-thirds of the total.  And about two-thirds of all eligible adults cast a ballot, the highest turnout in more than a century.

So what happened?

Despite low approval ratings, Trump could plausibly say in his State of the Union: "Jobs are booming, incomes are soaring, poverty is plummeting, crime is falling, confidence is surging, and our country is thriving."
